There is so much going on right now, but there’s always time for bread! Believe it or not, we now have an 11 week old baby who is soon going to start daycare. My husband and I wanted to take a day trip with her somewhere before she’s in daycare and I go back to full time work. We decided to go to Yellow Springs Ohio; a small town with beautiful parks and a fun “downtown” area. Well, we got rained out! We drove a little less than an hour to Glen Helen Park, made it 5 or 10 minutes down a trail before the clouds opened up and we got poured on! Ever try running through a trail filled with tree roots with a huge stroller? I don’t recommend it! The rain didn’t let up, so we decided to go back home, stopping in Springfield for lunch. SO glad we stopped at Rudy’s Smokehouse! If you’re in the Springfield area please stop in! We were greeted at the door by the owner, had brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, fries and of course cornbread. The portions are huge and the price is right! Now, as for the bread…
Presentation – 1 Crumb
I know that I’ve seen some pretty fancy cornbread presentations, but the presentation has to fit the atmosphere. Their cornbread was placed on a piece of red and white paper, and placed on a tray. This is perfectly acceptable since Rudy’s is not a restaurant with service, rather a pay at the counter and pick up your food joint.
Bread Variety – 1 Crumb
Well I ordered cornbread, and that’s what I got. Again, I would be shocked if anything but cornbread was served. Yes, it would be nice if I had another variety or cornbread, but that is rare and certainly not expected.
Quality of Bread – 1 Crumb
First of all, the cornbread was absolutely HUGE!!! It was as big as my pulled pork sandwich, which I could hardly finish. The weight of the cornbread was laughable, maybe a quarter of a pound…for cornbread?!? ha! It was dense, that’s for sure and usually when I see dense bread I think it’s going to be dry. I was pleased that that wasn’t the case. This cornbread was dense yes, but also juicy and flavorful. The outside had that dark brown, “hard” layer, while the inside was soft, moist and yellow. I kind of think of cornbread as I do cinnamon roll; I save the middle for last, I think it’s the best part. mmmm sooo good!
Quantity and quality of spread – .5 crumbs
The cornbread unfortunately was not served with any spread or butter. I had to walk over to where the fountain drinks were and grab a small packet of butter. You need like 4 of these, and it does make a difference. Very yummy with butter!
Cost – 1 crumb
All of their food is reasonably priced! The sandwiches range from $7.80 to $10.90, and a 2 meat combo for $20. Their sides are $2.99 and cornbread is one of those sides. For the portion of everything, pricing is great! I’ll take $2.99 cornbread all day, especially if it’s as big as my head. (Exaggerating here!)
so if you find yourself in Springfield Ohio, or just really want good bbq and have time to drive there, do yourself a favor and stop into Rudy’s Smokehouse!
Overal – 4.5 crumbs
Like I mentioned earlier, if you’re looking for good BBQ in general, or specifically seeking out amazing cornbread, you have to stop at Rudys Smokehouse. The only reason they didn’t get a perfect score is because the butter wasn’t served with the cornbread. Otherwise perfect! Big portions, great price juicy, tasty cornbread and fabulous staff!
