Hubby and I went out with a pair of good friends we hadn’t seen in a while, and they chose the restaurant. They chose Hen Quarter, which is an upscale Southern style restaurant. I went here once a couple of years ago for brunch, but never for dinner. I’ve heard they have great cocktails, unfortunately I’m still preggo and could not partake. However the food was absolutely stunning, and they had bread service, of course! 🙂
Presentation – 1 Crumb
I’m a sucker for cornbread in a skillet. Simple, yet elegant…maybe a little trendy, but that’s ok. The skillet was placed on a plate with a napkin underneath which both looks nice and acts as a trivet; the skillet was quite hot when it arrived to our table. The spoon was placed neatly on top without looking clunky or out of place. Love it!
Bread Variety – 1 Crumb
I know I’ve said this before, but cornbread stands by itself. There is no need for additional bread varieties here, and it would be weird if it came with something else. Could you imagine a skillet of cornbread being accompanied by a few slices of wheat? nah!
Quality of Bread – .5 Crumbs
It is indeed easy to mess up cornbread, and the more I have, the pickier I’ve become. Although this bread looks and smells amazing, it’s a bit too dry for my liking. I had more than a few crumbs on my plate when I sliced off a good portion. Sometimes it’s ok to have crumbs, and the cornbread still has moisture, that was not the case here. Yes, I’ve had drier cornbread, but not at an upscale place like Hen Quarter. We also ordered lobster dip which was absolutely outstanding, so I had high hopes for this cornbread. If this came out of the oven like 30 seconds earlier it might have blown me away, but it was crumbly. The taste was great, again just a bit too dry.
Quality and Quantity of Spread – 1 Crumb
Their cornbread came with a huge portion of whipped butter with chives and cracked pepper. Mmm!!! The butter was placed right on top of the cornbread and sat there and melted slowly. The butter was the saving grace of this cornbread. Without it, the dry center would have ruined it and there would only be 1 crumb on this review for presentation. ha! There was plenty of butter, at one point I thought I had taken too much but there was plenty left for the last slice of cornbread.
Cost – 1 Crumb
Did I mention yet how upscale Hen Quarter is? The entrees here range from $24 to $106 for their Notorious B.A.S (Big Ass Steak) which is a 30 oz tomahawk steak! Their appetizers range from $10-$20 with a few at market price. Their cornbread is on the low end of that spectrum at $10. I would said this is a fair price for how big the bread is and again for being at such an upscale place. I mentioned earlier that we also had a lobster dip appetizer, that was a $20 dish, which also seems fair.
Overall – 4.5/5
If you’re in the Dublin Ohio, Birdgepark area, it is totally worth stopping by Hen Quarter. They have Southern style food that is taken to a whole new level. I had a bowl of their gumbo for dinner, and it was exquisite! Served with a crawfish on top of a bed of rice. yum! All of their appetizers look great, but of course you had to try their cornbread. Although a tab bit dry for my liking, their butter was amazing and saved the dish. I also hear that their desserts are great as well. I”ll be back in the spring when I can enjoy a cocktail, and taste their ever changing seasonal menu, giving the cornbread a second chance too. I know a lot of other food was mentioned, but I tried to stay on track. Didn’t do too shabby for a bread blog, ha!
